This is how Portland fashion should be! Inspired designers, serious modeling talent, an appreciative audience, and City Hall all coming together to produce the 1st ever fashion show from City Hall, and a sustainable/green fashion show at that! Portland IS the MOST sustainable city in the entire USA ya know!

Anna Cohen, who needs no further introduction debuted her spring 2007 line, while Saffrona unveiled their hand dyed and spun 100% silk gowns that every lady attending would have died for!

DoubleCross Belt Co., and Flood clothing showed what reconstructed really means in their spring 2007 lines, and Nora Catherine and Akiva jewelry kept the audience guessing as to what bling would next appear adorning the models.

The eclectic group of tourists, businessmen, fashionistas, passers by, industry insiders, and serious fashion show groupies turned out en mass for this free to the public event, with a last count of nearly 400 people thronging the court yard, side walks, and grassy areas to glimpse a view.

Justice-Driven Business Fights Slavery with Economic Empowerment

The Emancipation Network (TEN) is a national abolitionist organization fighting the human rights emergency of human trafficking – the modern practice of slavery. TEN operates by buying handicraft products made by survivors of trafficking around the world, and selling them at home and community-based Awareness parties across the US, and at our web store, raising awareness of this human rights crisis among Americans at the same time. TEN has been called the ‘Social Justice Tupperware’..
TEN sends profits from the sale of these handicrafts back to Nepal, Cambodia, India Thailand, and Latin America, where the funds pay salaries for the survivors and high risk girls making the handicrafts, as well as contributing to the trafficking prevention and rescue work being done by TEN’s partner organizations and survivors themselves.
Over the past year, TEN has built a network of hundreds of volunteers across America who are spreading the word about human trafficking, and efforts being made to end it.
Providing Financial Independence and Empowerment
South Asia and Southeast Asia are two regions of the world with the most severe sex trafficking problems. The target age for girls sold into brothels in this region is 11 to 14 years old. If these girls are fortunate enough to escape or be rescued from brothels, it is extremely difficult for them to reintegrate into society due to discrimination, lack of education or skills, and the physical and emotional damage resulting from years of exploitation.
TEN’s partner organizations overseas provide trafficking survivors with a safe place to live and a full range of support services to help them heal and reintegrate, including job training and income-generating opportunities.
However, in order to become self-sufficient, survivors and high risk girls need markets for the products they create. This is where TEN comes into the picture. TEN’s purchase of these products contributes to the ongoing self-sufficiency of the survivors who make them. The funds which have been invested also support the trafficking prevention and rescue efforts of our provider groups.
Trafficking Prevention:
TEN addresses one of the primary difficulties in stopping trafficking – the fact that the areas that the girls are taken from often have depressed economies and few employment options to "compete" with the profits of trafficking. TEN is a source of economic opportunity for young women in areas vulnerable to trafficking.
Sarah Symons, TEN’s Founder and Director, became involved in the cause after seeing a documentary at a film festival in Tribeca, NYC in 2002. Sarah, who is a musician and composer, had written a song for a film which was featured in the festival. While at the festival Sarah decided to see another film, "The Day my God Died", by Andrew Levine, a documentary on human trafficking. At first she thought "this is too heavy a subject for this occasion" and thought she really didn’t need to see this film on the subject of slavery, kidnapping and forced prostitution. But she decided to go, and in fact was so moved by this film, and by the Underground Railroad that survivors in the film had created, she decided to dedicate her life to helping fight slavery.
Having previously worked in NYC with homeless and sexually abused kids, Sarah was no newcomer to the issue of child sexual exploitation, with the growing demand for teens and younger kids out on the street.
Finding a Way to Help
In 2002, Sarah was living on Cape Cod with 2 small children, a husband and a Labrador retriever. Wanting to become involved in the struggle to end trafficking, she began by volunteering in the US for Maiti Nepal, an anti-trafficking organization based in Kathmandu. A year later she was invited to visit the group in Nepal. After talking to the group’s director about the need for self sufficiency for the survivors, she saw the beautiful handicraft products survivors were making and put the two ideas together to create TEN.
Sarah purchased a few of the handicrafts and asked friends in the US if they thought people would purchase these beautiful goods. The friends were very impressed with the quality and originality of the goods. After a year of planning and passionately enlisting friends and volunteers, Sarah went back to Asia in March 2005 and bought $10,000 of purses, jewelry, home décor and handmade paper products. In the first year of operations, TEN has sent 10 times that amount back to Asia in the form of purchase orders and donations.
Why Home Parties?
Since trafficking for sexual exploitation is such a sensitive issue, Sarah felt that home parties were the perfect venue to present the issue on a personal level, breaking it down for people and balancing the tragedy with more positive aspects – giving people a way to become involved by buying goods or volunteering to have their own parties. Sarah explains "It is really just about getting people in the door and making them aware of the situation…bringing it to people in a comfortable atmosphere with wine, cheese, and friends"
One Girl at a Time
According to Sarah, "Since returning from my most recent trip to India (March 2006), I have shown slides from the trip and shared my experiences for several groups. Each time I am amazed, and audience members are amazed, by the faces of the children and young women in the photos. Their faces are smiling and full of hope. Their eyes are shining with possibility. They are visibly excited to be in school or to be working in a handicrafts program. Even in what seems like extremely difficult circumstances, even in the red light district school, even living on a train platform or in a shelter for trafficking survivors, they have not given up on themselves. They are not paralyzed by the enormity of the problem of trafficking. They cannot afford apathy or despair. And neither can we".
"The next time someone shrugs their shoulders and says to me ‘but you guys are only helping a few thousand girls – what about the other millions of girls?’, I am going to have to pull out some of these photos and set them straight. One child at a time, one woman at a time. That is how we are working to fight slavery. There is certainly a place for larger social and political initiatives, and we can participate there too, but our mission focuses on individuals and local groups who have the courage to keep believing and fighting even in the midst of unimaginable suffering, even after being enslaved".

Whirl wind" Tod Foulk and his "ever passionate SEMPER Fashion dream" have once again decended upon the local fashion scene, this time in conjuction with Christoper Cone of CC Productions and Tito, of Portland Art Museum Young At Art , to bring the sartorial splendor of Portland Fashion Week 2006 to the Rose City.
Last year's SEMPER Fashion production of 10 shows in 8 days was Portland's boldest attempt at a Fashion Week ever, but this years shows of local clothing, jewelry, and accessory designers will be even bigger, bolder, and more fearsome.
Scheduled for Oct. 20-27, Portland Fashion Week 2006 will be held regionally, and in part benefit local charities.

As promised -- photos from the Girl's Inc. "Power of the Purse" fundraiser.

The first purse to be auctioned was Lisa Schroeder's which sold for $900. Schroeder, who owns Mother's Bistro (love that place) and Mama Mia's Trattoria, had Janny Downey at Minou-Minou design her purse.

Girls Inc. girls modeled the purses with style and grace. Some were sassy -- sashaying their way down the runway, others were simply sweet and gracious. But all were very poised and well, bold.

Rebecca Webb, KINK FM 102, emcee'd the event.

Webb's purse was designed by Elizabeth Rohloff who uses vintage buttons and ribbons, combined with high quality fabrics to produce sophisticated edition lines.

Vera Katz' little black bag was a crowd favorite. Designed by Faith Walmer at Faith Bags and Jewelry, Katz' bag was created by pre-stringing up to 40,000 beads on silk or cotton thread and then knitting them using needles the size of angel hair pasta! It's so small and elegant. It sold for $1,300.

This bag, designed by Rebecca Pearcy, owner of Queen Bee Creations, was a also very popular. It went for $1,700.

This bag, designed for Victoria Trabosh president of Itafari Foundation, was designed by Ronda Kelly of the Lucina Company. Trabosh brought the bowl back with her from Rwanda.

Tracy Barry KGW Channel 8 anchor, had her purse designed by Suzanne Sherman of Fat Cat Hats and Sacks.

Barry's bag sold for $1,700.

My personal favorite, designed by Wendi Martin at WeMa Designs for Ann Sacks, Amy Sacks Eyewear (yes it's the same Ann Sacks as the tile) sold for $1,800. Unfortunately, I was out after the first bid.

Fun was definitely had by all who attended, including yours truly. I'm saving money now so I can outbid someone ... anyone ... at next year's event.

The Power of the Purse is not your standard fundraising dinner. Where else can you see personalities like China Forbes from Pink Martini, the First Lady of Oregon, Columnist Renee Mitchell, Darcelle XV, Vera Katz, and Bruce Carey together? Just imagine...

The Power or the Purse is a benefit for Girls Inc. of Northwest Oregon®, a local Portland non-profit that supports girls in recognizing their potential, honoring their resilience and believing in themselves. Join us for this special fundraising event, as we dream together of developing the "power of the purse" in support the amazing girls of Oregon! Funds raised will be used to launch new programs that encourage our girls to be "strong, smart and bold" -- including an "Economic Literacy" program that introduces girls to basic economic and financial concepts, including money management, investments, and global economics.

The idea behind "Power of the Purse" is that our power lies in our purse. Imagine if every woman gave the worth of her purse, the contents of her checking account, or the purse strings to greater assets--all to support girls.

There could be no end to the resources we could generate! Local personalities, including Oregonian columnist Renee Mitchell, will design purses to be auctioned off at the event.

Power of the Purse will be held Thursday, March 16th from 6:00 p.m. to approximately 9:00 p.m. at the Portland Art Museum's Grand Ballroom. The dinner will be catered by Salvador Molly's. Individual tickets are $100 each and table sponsorship is $1200. Table patrons will be recognized in the program.

Happy New Year, y Cupleanos Nuevo Portland! 2005 was definitely the year in Portland fashion! With "Fashionpaloozazaza" in May, "Bikinis, Martinis and a WHOLE lot more!" in July, the "SEMPER Fashion/Saffrona guerilla fashion show in the Pearl" for Sept. all of "Portland Fashion Week", the "Maxim Model Search" in Nov., and interspersed with shows in every quadrant of Portland from dozens of designers this was a year to remember. Then capping it all off in style was the Pala New Years Groove where Inks' n'n Threads by Karlie Foster made her debut along side veterans DoubleCross Belt Co., Saffrona, Mishke, HMS, Awearness, 5E, Nora Catherine, and Eden Dawn.

Wow! What a night! The scene was cool, the people fun, the buffet scrumptuous, the Champagne flowed, and the party was exquisite!
KATU's Steve Ackerman was there, so was Jason Jeffords- head of the Fashion and Print Division of MMM and FW05 Winter show Model, Top Models Blanca Blanco and Evonne De La Fuentes showed up, MMM model Gillian Morris said hi and got some more cool peeps on the ace list for me, Chris Cone and I partied together, and a WHOLE LOT MORE cool people I can't even remember made the night a smashing success!
Keri, Jason and Steve Ackerman have signed on as a few of the Portland Celebrities for the upcoming Bikini-USA Oregon judges. Keri you may remember was a judge on KGW's "Give Me The Mic" Portland talent search, so this is old hat to her. She has also graciously offered a one year modeling contract to the lucky winner of the Bikini USA- Oregon competitions! Thanx for the great night Murph, the dance, dinner, and everything else!

Bikini-USA-Oregon updates and info.

Bikini-USA modeling competition is coming to Oregon in '06.

All sport, fitness, fashion and swimwear models both amateur and professional are encouraged to apply. NO FEE is required for registering! Thirteen events are planned for across Oregon including the grand finale' in August '06. This is the first year the competitions are being held in Oregon, and the 5th year held nationally.

The winner will be crowned Miss Bikini-USA Oregon for 2006, win $1000.00 in cash and prizes, including a modeling contract with Murphy Model Management, be flown round trip 1st class for four days to South Carolina for the national competition in Oct. '06, and have a chance there at winning a major national modeling contract, more prizes, $1000.00 more in cash, and moving up to the international competition.

Judging will be done by a panel of local and Portland celebrities, with the criteria being based upon a personal interview at 10%, 15% stage presence, 15% fashion club wear, and 60% photos.

This competition is open to all physically fit, photogenic models age 18 and up.

Past national winners have been Kimberly Ensey, Suzy Assuncao, Ali Smith, and Raylene Zatarain, all of whom as a result have appeared in national print such as Maxim, American Health and Fitness, Low rider, Supreme, Super Models UNLTD., and American Curves magazines. Movies, t.v., and ads such as Friday Night Lights, No Pain No Gain, Bud Light, Tecate, Lone Star Motors, Acura, Ego Swimwear, Darque Tan, Fear Factor, Compaq Computers, and Ujena.

Bikini-USA is the most tasteful and classy bikini competition in the world. No thongs, fish net, revealing swimwear, or nudity of any kind is allowed.

The 2005 competition was sponsored by ESPN Sports Radio, Rock Star Energy Drink, The Sheritan Yankee Clipper, Safari Club INTL., Urok, IMODEL.COM, OMP, CMG Models, and Supreme Magazine, FYI.

This will be the great North West's premier swimwear competition!

He raised bank for the Salvation Army's women's and children's center here in Portland, while his expenses would have broken many lesser men! Well drinks and Pala fare for more than 200 peeps all night ain't cheap! Uh uh! AND SPECIAL thanx to one of his buds who even kicked in a check with 4 digits on it! SEMPER Fashion, Tito, Voodoo Promotions, and the rest of the independent fashion promoters and event producers should consider hanging up our collective promotional hats after Friday night's shindig. The bar has been raised exponentially and we aint tall enough to reach it! King Kong could limbo under that sucka' in a spinal brace standing on stiletto stilts with Abe Lincon's hat on upside down! I think they need an oxygen mask on to get it that high! OOH Rah CC!

I know that all girls will want to be in our next series of Sirens products. Swimsuit Sirens is going very well and we are attracting some big money players. We plan to shot the next calendar in a very exotic place. We can't give out that location at this time but when that time comes and the 12 new Sirens are chosen they will be in shock of the fun they are about to have. With EPM now in Nashville, TN as well as Seattle / PDX and Canada, BC we are growing and exciting things are happening for some of our current Sirens. Tara Rava our June Siren for the 2006 calendar is now working in Greece in some very exotic island town. She is having a ball. Serinda Swan the calendars cover Siren works all the time in BC and when we can get her we have her help promote the Sirens in the USA. Gillian has been offered to model in Korea. Now that is exciting.

As usual the Foulk household finds a noble cause to help out with during the Christmas season. We have been blessed our entire lives, it is payback time and this year is no different! So in keeping with the spirit of the season and in the finest of Christmas traditions, we have decided to help a family we saw off of Craig's List. Good ol' C.L.! FYI: The posting was not made by the family as they don't have internet access, but by a loving individual and friend who is helping them out as well.

The family of which I speak is uninsured, and composed of a mom, dad with terminal cancer, and a very cool very fashionable 16 yr old daughter. The parents want nothing for themselves but to give a nice Christmas to their deserving, stoic daughter.

Judging will be done by a panel of local Portland celebrities, and the criteria will be based upon a personal interview which is 10% of the competition, 15% stage presence, 15% fashion club wear, and 60% photos. This competition is open to all physically fit, photogenic models aged 18 and up.

Past national winners have been Kimberly Ensey, Suzy Assuncao, Ali Smith, and Raylene Zatarain, all of whom as a result have appeared in national print such as Maxim, American Health and Fitness, Low Rider, Supreme, Super Models UNLTD., and American Curves magazines. Movies, t.v., and ads such as Friday Night Lights, No Pain No Gain, Bud Light, Tecate, Lone Star Motors, Acura, Ego Swimwear, Darque Tan, Fear Factor, Compaq Computers, and Ujena.

Bikini-USA is one of the most taseful and classy bikini competitions in the world. No thongs, fish nets, revealing swimwear, or nudity of any kind is allowed.

The 2005 competition was sponsored by ESPN Sports Radio, Rock Star Energy Drink, The Sheritan Yankee Clipper, Safari Club INTL., Urok, IMODEL.COM, OMP, CMG Models, and Supreme Magazine, FYI.

This will be the great North West's premier swimwear competiton for 2006!

We are looking for kids ages 3 - 4 ½ for a specific upcoming project shooting in the Portland area. It is a major brand with possibilities of making lots of $$. What are you willing to do to end slavery?

Dear Friends,

Last month, I did a little informal survey among parents, asking them the average cost of a child?s birthday party, including gifts, the cake, entertainment, party favors, etc. The answer: about $160. Meanwhile, in Thailand near the border to Myanmar, or in rural Cambodia or Nepal, parents might get about $150 for a daughter sold into the sex trade. A girl who is bought for $150 can be sold for sex 10 times a night and bring in $10,000 a month. Many girls do not survive into adulthood in the rough world of the brothels, so that?s $150 for a whole life of birthdays.

Look, I?m not saying we shouldn?t do nice things for our kids, or celebrate their presence in our lives, nor am I suggesting we can end slavery with just money. But I do feel a little heartsick about the terrible imbalance of the situation. Similarly, as Christmas draws near, I find it painful that we celebrate the birth of someone who taught us to give our lives and possessions to the poor with a frenzy of materialism!

There are many ways to help trafficking survivors this holiday season. You can start by telling friends about the human rights emergency of human trafficking. You can write to politicians expressing your concern. You could make a donation to TEN or to one of our partner organizations (Maiti Nepal, AFESIP, Sanlaap, DEPDC or others), through The Emancipation Network, and get a tax write off while you?re at it. (Just send a note with your check, earmarking where you would like it to go). Many of you have signed up to host holiday Awareness parties, Thank you! You could plan now for an event in February. If you can?t do that, then why not buy some gifts from our web store, at www.emancipationnetwork.org.

Check out the attached article which was printed in the Cape Cod Times and other papers in New England. In response to this article, 50 people have contacted us interested in hosting awareness events and volunteering in the office!

Recommended Reading and Online Research: Check out ?Disposable People? by Kevin Bales. This wonderful book, recently revised and reprinted, exposes the face of the ?new slavery. According to Bales, ?Government corruption, plus the vast increase in the number of people and their ongoing impoverishment, has led to the new slavery. For the first time in human history there is an absolute glut of potential slaves... With so many possible slaves, their value has plummeted. Buying a slave is no longer a major investment, like buying a car or a house. Slaveholders get all the work they can out of their slaves, then throw them away. The new disposability has dramatically increased the amount of profit to be made from a slave, and has made the question of legal ownership less important?.

Let's be realistic: most people are wiling to pay something to end slavery, but they're not willing to make a great sacrifice. The good news is that if enough people feel that way, a small sacrifice is all that will be needed, no miracle is required, just the enforcement of existing laws and agreements, the development of a few new ones and the provision of help to get these people on their feet. Putting the pressure on its profits is a key strategy for ending slavery.

A Day in the Life - this, unfortunately, is not a survivor story. It is an account of a girl?s daily life in a Thai brothel (excerpted from ?Disposable People? by Kevin Bales)

When Siri wakes it is about noon, In the instant of waking she knows exactly who and what she has become? the soreness in her genitals reminds her of the fifteen men she had sex with the night before. Siri is fifteen years old. Sold by her parents a year ago, her resistance and her desire to escape the brothel are breaking down and acceptance and resignation are taking their place.

In the provincial city of Ubon Ratchitani in northeastern Thailand, Siri works and lives in a brothel the woman working behind the noodle stall outside Siri's brothtel is also spy, warder, watchdog, procurer, and dinner-lady to Siri and the other 24 girls in the brothel. The brothel is surrounded by a wall with iron gates meeting the street. Within the wall is a dusty yard, a concrete table and a small shrine. A low door leads into a windowless concrete room thick with the smell of cigarettes, stale beer vomit and sweat. This is the selection room (bong du). At night the girls sit on a bench under glaring lights while the men at the tables drink and choose the one they want.

The man follows the girl past a window where a bookkeeper takes his money and records which girl he has taken. From there he is led to the girl's room. The brothel degenerates even further even further into a haphazard shanty warren of tiny cubicles. 5 X 7 rooms with thin cardboard and scrap wood walls hold a bed and little else.

Siri has plastered her walls with pictures and posters of teenage pop stars cut from magazines. A single bare light bulb hangs above.

After rising at midday, Siri washes herself in cold water from the single concrete trough that serves the 25 women in the brothel. Then she goes to the noodle stand for breakfast. Through the afternoon, if she does not have any clients, she chats with the other girls as they drink beer and play cards or make decorative handicrafts together. If the pimp is away, the girls will joke around, but if not they must be constantly deferential for he can harm them or use them as he pleases.

At 5:00 Siri and the others are told to dress, put on makeup and prepare for the nights work. By 7:00 the men are coming in, purchasing drinks and choosing girls, and Siri will have been chosen by one of the 10-18 men who will buy her that night. Many men choose Siri because she looks much younger than her 15 years. Slight and round faced, dressed to accentuate her youth, she might be 11 or 12. Because she looks like a child she can be sold as a new girl at a higher price, about $15.

Siri is very frightened that she will get AIDS. Many girls from her village returned home to die from AIDS after being sold into brothels. She tries to insist that her clients use condoms and in most cases she is successful. But when policemen use her, or the pimp himself, they will do as they please; if she tries to insist, she will be beaten and raped. She also fears pregnancy, and like the other girls she receives monthly injections of Depo-Provera.

Though she is only 15, Siri is now resigned to being a prostitute. After she was sold and taken to the brothel, she discovered that the work was not what she thought it would be. Siri had a sheltered childhood and was ignorant of what it meant to work in a brothel. Her first client hurt her and she ran away. On the street with no money, she was quickly caught, dragged back, beaten and raped. That night she was forced to take on a chain of clients until the early morning. The beatings and the work continued night after night until her will was broken. Now she is sure that she is a bad person, to have deserved what has happened to her. She copes as best she can. She takes a dark pride in her higher price and the fact that so many men choose her. It is the adjustment of the concentration camp, an effort to make sense of horror?.

Of all the sadness in this account, I find the description of Siri's walls, covered with pictures and posters of pop stars, to be perhaps the saddest part. It is such a typical teenage thing to do even in such a bleak place, her human spirit manages to stay alive. Siri may feel that her life is over, but girls like her do manage to escape and to rebuild their lives, with a lot of help and support. The Emancipation Network's efforts are helping to make it possible for girls like Siri to create new and meaningful lives for themselves.

I don't know either, it's a rhetorical question thillies!

Ok, I haven't been able to go to Imade's Pala Lounge but once since FW05.
My loss of course, but traffic was so baad rush hour on Friday, Oct 21st that I stopped by to have a nice cola beverage and let some of the bumper to bumper subside. Good thing too, since Meagan the bar babe handed me a promo card for the night's Fur Ball along with my pop. What is a Fur Ball, you may wonder as I did?Aside from the obvious, its a neat little get together for those inclinded to dress up in either faux fur, or in my case the real deal. Great idea since I am a Davey Crockett type anyways, and I darn I wish I woulda thunked it.

Well, there was definitely a feline theme to the night as DJ Puss Puss was spinning, and Semper Fashionista and Portland Top Model Angie Goodness, Josie, and the rest of the pussy cats modeled the latest in ears, tails, and nails! Oh my! Kind of a pre-Halloween party. Rrrrrraaaaeeeerrr! It was nice to see most attendees were attired in faux, but an occasion mink stoll, rabbit coat, and in my case coyote pelt and badger hat were appearant. So much for political correctness!

As with most Pala events, the trend setters show up fashionably late, and this was no exception. From 9:00 PM unitl 11:00 it was the regular die hard models and cool peeps crowd, of whom I knew most. So myself and Nate, AKA Peter Van Hartstrom of HartMindSoul were able to knock around some great business and pleasure ideas, including a visit to his grrlfriend during Miami Model Week, who is now producing shows for Valentino, and a grrrrrreat as yet top secret cross promotional idea that is all Nate's.

But after 11:00 the crowd really came alive, precluding any further business since shmoozong, dancing and drinks were now the order of the evening.

As you can see below (or whenever I retrieve my errant camera) the audience participation was spot on, with a crowded dance floor, no room at the bar, and not one empty seat in da house!

T.E.N. Fall Newsletter, 2005

Thank you for your support or our organization - by hosting or attending an Awareness Party, by joining our mailing list, or by your purchase of a product made by survivors. We are so glad that so many have joined our struggle to give women and girls around the world the most basic human right: freedom.

In the first five months of operation, we sold over $14,000 worth of products made by trafficking survivors, at home parties, school and church awareness events!!

According to our partner and product provider, AFESIP Cambodia, it costs about $60 a month to feed, house, and educate a girl at a shelter in Cambodia (including medical care and intensive counseling), and $100 a month to pay a survivor working at the Kompong Cham workshop (this is a fair living wage in rural Cambodia). So our efforts are really going to go a long way to help care for survivors, and high risk girls, throughout the world.

The success of our efforts is due to the commitment and hard work of the survivors who made the beautiful products, the overseas staff who have rescued and trained these young women, and our volunteers in the US who have taken the plunge to host an event and educatel their friends about trafficking.

Thanks to the efforts of our team, we have been able to reorder products from all of our partner agencies in Asia, contributing to the ongoing self-sufficency of survivors, and also to trafficking prevention programs, legal aid, rescue, education and other programs.

If you are ready to deepen your understanding and knowledge of the issue of trafficking worldwide. Check out the website www.protectionproject.org. Protection Project is an academic research group that has been studying trafficking for the past 15 years.

For books, I recommend Louise Brown’s “Sex Slaves”. Louise is a British academic who lived in Asia for many years, studying trafficking and sexual exploitation. Her book is a painful read, but if you are ready to dig deeper, it’s a great place to start.

“Gender, Trafficking, and Slavery” a collection of articles edited by Rachel Masika, published by Oxfam, also offers diverse perspectives from all over the world, including Europe and the former Soviet Republics.

News from our Overseas Partners:

Staff at AFESIP Cambodia are still dealing with the violent break-in and kidnapping of 91 rescued girls living at their shelter, which occurred last winter. AFESIP submitted a statement to the Cambodian Parliament, advocating for better laws to protect children from exploitation, and a stronger law enforcement response to the incident at the shelter.

At Maiti Nepal, a unit has recently been formed to advocate for better treatment of women and girls at the quickly growing dance and cabin restaurants in Kathmandu. While Nepali children have traditionally been taken to India for exploitation, there have been some terrible abuses at the cabin restaurants right in town. Maiti is campaigning for laws restricting girls under 16 from working at the cabin restaurants.

As a result of TEN’s product purchases, Maiti Nepal is also working to create a workshop outside of their shelter, to increase productivity and offer full time outside employment to survivors.

We will be adding three new partner/product providers this fall:

Esther Benjamin Trust in Nepal.

Firsthand Survivor Account

The following is a firsthand account from Gita and Nisha, survivors of trafficking who now work for Maiti Nepal, stopping cars at a Border Transit Station between India and Nepal, is operated by Maiti Nepal. Gina and Nisha work with local police to investigate suspicious situations, and thus prevent trafficking cases in progress. Gita and Nisha sometimes stop as many as four girls a day from being sold into the sex industry.

Nisha’s story “I was trafficked at age 13 (the target age for victims in South Asia is 11-14 years old). I accepted a job from a family friend to work at a jewelry business in India. What the woman really sold was girls. When I first arrived at the brothel, I was locked in a cage for seven days. They didn’t give me any food until I agreed to have sex with customers. The cage was a narrow cubicle, just wide enough for a thin mattress. I had sex with clients for less than one dollar each, but I never saw any of the money”.

The price of a human life, in Nepal and India is between $300 and $1000. Nisha was told she would have to repay the price that was paid for her, but it was impossible to do so, with charges for food, medical care, and lodging constantly accruing.

“I felt like a caged animal at the brothel. All I could think of was how to escape”. Nisha managed to escape while visiting a clinic for birth control shots. Police sent her to Maiti Nepal, who arranged for her to be repatriated.

“Not so long ago, I weighed 126 pounds; now I’m down to just 95 pounds,” says Gita, now 20 years old. Gita was infected with HIV/AIDS after being forced to service as many as 50 men a day for the three years she lived in a Bombay brothel.

“I know the disease is taking over my body. The diarrhea is constant. So are the sweats and headaches: Gita also suffers from painful bone tuberculosis, a complication of AIDS. “I know I don’t have long, but stopping the traffickers is my revenge - the only one I have. My life is ruined…but everything happens for a reason. Maybe this awful thing happened to me so I could stop it from happening to others”.

What about those of us lucky enough not to have suffered as Gina and Nisha have? We can also use our resources to stop it happening to others.

A lot of my daily work at The Emancipation Network is simply the brass-tacks of running a retail operation: handling inventory, buying and developing products, finding new home party hosts, accounting, shipping, marketing, and so on. The incredible courage and resiliency of survivors keeps me motivated when the going gets tough. I’m reminded of what I’m really here to do, and I’m so grateful to be part of the team working to prevent the heinous practice of slavery for sexual exploitation.

US Government Anti-Trafficking Efforts

This article was contributed by Laura Lederer, US State Department Senior Advisor on Trafficking. Prior to joining the State Dept. Office of Global Affairs, Lederer researched trafficking for 15 years as founder of The Protection Project.

A heartfelt thank you to The Emancipation Network for its efforts to bring products made by trafficking victims to the United States: it is projects like yours that make a difference. From one who has been working to stop trafficking for over fifteen years, the emergence of these small businesses and micro enterprise endeavors are a positive new development in our anti-trafficking activities.

Looking back over the past decade, and forward into the future, I would say we’re now engaged in what I consider to be the most important work to date on human trafficking. For the first decade, 1990 – 2000, we were learning about the phenomenon, gathering information, and responding on an ad hoc basis.

Then, in October of 2000, Congress passed a brilliant anti-trafficking law called the Trafficking Victims Protection Act. This act has a two-fold purpose: first, to punish the perpetrators, and second, to protect and assist the victims.

At the time the law did something no law in any country had done: it not only added new statutes to strengthen the prosecution of traffickers, such as sex trafficking of children or by force, fraud or coercion; and unlawful conduct with respect to documents, it also required benefits and services to be given to any victim of a severe form of trafficking. We called this a “victim-centered approach,” and in the last decade dozens of countries have followed our lead.

Since the law passed, the current Administration has worked hard to implement the law. Three years ago President Bush created the President's Interagency Task Force on Trafficking in Persons. This cabinet level task force brings political will at the highest levels to this issue.

Inside the Department of State, four years ago, Secretary of State Powell also set up the Office to Combat and Monitor Trafficking in Persons. This Office has three main roles:

1. To produce an annual Trafficking in Persons Report, which assesses and rates every country in the world on its progress on human trafficking. The TIP Report is our main foreign policy tool to increase dialogue with other countries and to provide an impetus for serious action

2. To run an International Grant-making Program, which makes grants for prevention programs, law enforcement programs to train police, prosecutors, judges, and others involved in the criminal justice system; and victim assistance programs including shelters and services.

3. To provide public diplomacy around human trafficking and related issues. This includes meetings with foreign government officials and diplomats; public awareness and education campaigns; and public relations.

Other U.S. Government agencies are also working to stop trafficking. For example,

The Department of Justice has launched an innovative new campaign to establish 20 multidisciplinary task forces linking federal and local law enforcement. These task forces, launched in 20 cities across the United States, help communities combat trafficking in their own states and cities. To date, over 172 new trafficking cases have been opened.

The Department of Health and Human Services has launched a new national public awareness campaign entitled, “Look Beneath the Surface.” The campaign reaches out to various geographic communities and work sectors to educate and help raise awareness about trafficking. The main purpose of this campaign is to help identify and rescue new victims.

The Department of Defense has developed a new “zero tolerance” program that prohibits military personnel engagement in any activities related to trafficking, including frequenting brothels.

Finally, both US AID and the U.S. Department of State are supporting a number of programs in countries around the world - programs that help rescue those being held against their will; programs that help build shelters and provide services to those who have been trafficked; programs that help rehabilitate and restore victims.

We have come a long way, but there is still much to be done. The U.S. government looks forward to continued partnerships with both foreign and US non-profits working to stop this modern day form of slavery.

What could you do to fight slavery?

The Fight to End Slavery

For centuries, the issue of slavery has been on the table. After the Civil War in the U.S., many thought that slavery was completely abolished, not taking into account that it may exist elsewhere in the world. In places like India, Nepal, Cambodia, Latin America, and the former Soviet Republics, thousands of women and children are sold into sex slavery each year.

The Emancipation Network joins forces with many other organizations located in those areas to help prevent this terrible fact of life. Our partner organization, Maiti Nepal, was recently recognized with the International Children’s Award, an honor they truly deserved. Maiti Nepal works tirelessly to tend to those hurt by sex trade.

One survivor helped by Maiti Nepal was Maili Lama, who was sold into slavery at 21, and forced to remain a slave for fear of losing her infant daughter. Maili now works with her husband to locate brothels in India that house Nepalese girls, and despite threats from brothel owners, she gains their respect and trust and then helps them to escape. Maili is a true revolutionary - she does not wish her past upon anyone. “People think that we are bad, that this is our fault . . . but I want to believe that someday, our voices will be heard”

Maiti Nepal produces several of the items TEN sells here in the United States, a place were slavery was once very prominent. Who knows, maybe someday, the whole world will join the fight against slavery.

My busy social schedule (a night out with Shane and his lady, Portland's Top Model Autumn Day) didn't permit me to attend the "Event" at the old Conan's on Hawthorn Wednesday night, but with a group like that which was present and accounted for, it couldn't help but have been "an Event".
However Fiona and I were able to attend the end of the 7:00 PM Urbaca 'Tickled', all-pink fashion show put on URBACA and Olivia Belle as benefit for Breast Cancer awareness, and the opening festivities of the Allison Sumner Art/Fashion 'out on a limb by a thread' installation at the Gallery 500 Thursday night.

The 'Pink' show was a bright and festive affair with 'pink' champange, lite snacks, and what I have now become accustomed to seeing from any event that Sherry Okamura has her hands into (Fashionpaloozazaza among them) beautiful and aromatic, hand crafted soaps gayly packaged (in pink this time, who woulda thunked?) along with mammogram and breast health awarness literature that she put out free to the public. (We begged a package off her to send home to Fi's Mom Scappoose since Sherry's soaps are such a nice product, and Fi's Mom is girlie like that.)
For their show, Urbaca rolled the whole salon to the sides allowing for a spacious 'runway' that wound out from a dressing room near the foyer and ran for the entire length of the salon to accommodate the dozen models and the large group of 1st Thursday revelers attending.
The models were fabulous wearing the beautiful fashions in pink palates ranging from pastel salmon shades through deep, rich, nearly burgundy colors. Of course the hair and make up was done by Team Urbaca, but I was really happy to see and get to finally introduce my daughter to uber cosmetologist Kristin Arnett of Fashion Week 06 fame, who was a 'special guest' make up artist for the night it seems. It was really neato seeing 2 of my favorite make up grrlz, much less Portland fashionistas, doing things together like that.

Being late and with parking at a premium, Fi and I marched from Urbaca to Gallery 500 for what I was expecting to be more fabulously fearsome fashions from the one and only "Bossy Boots" herself, Allison Sumner.
Boots did Justin's Gallery 500 up right, with a short elevated runway taking up the center, wall art showing the stupidity of prejudice and class separation, individually named seats for the vips, and a smart, classy, well stocked, little bar manned by a very nice gentleman who even let my 13 yr. old run an orange juice and grenadine tab till she could relax some funding from her misplaced paternal unit. Since we got to Allison's show way early, we had time to hob nob, try to find Boots to say hi to (which we never did!!! waaaaa), exchange pleasantries with Justin, who I hadn't seen for 2 years since a PFI party held there, and generally met and greeted the ecclectic crowd.
Knowing the kinds of fashions and models that Sumner usually employs, I knew we were in for quite a show. She totally stole the Dante's Inferno "I want to be feared" fierce fashion show that was a part of Portland Fashion Week 06 with her creative use of bandanas and chaps in men's wear. So I was quite eager to see what the heck she could come up for this go around. Unfortunately we were unable to see the show! The antiquated elevator system that the building employs necessitates the use of an elevator operator, who had the elevator abscounded from her when she took a momentary break! Too funny I was thinking when she asked me and Fi to run down to whichever floor the 'vator was on and to bring it back up. No worry I thought as we headed down from the 5th floor. No 'vator on the 4th, 3rd, 2nd or on any floors even when we got to the ground and went back up! Hu?
What's with that we thought. Until we went back to the ground floor and heard frantic screams for help and severe banging going on from the elevator shaft and coming from BELOW. The dang 'vator was stuck with someone in it on a basement level far far below! Well, we called the emergency number, and watched alot of people walk the 5 floors to enjoy the show while we waited and shouted encouragement to the entombed one below.
We knew the show must be starting, but after running up and down 5 flights of stairs multiple times searching for a nonexistant elevator, my parachuter's knee couldn't hold up any more, and instead of being fearful and impressed by Bossy Boots, Fi and I just enjoyed a nice dinner at our friend Ted Pappas' Greek Cusina Restaurant (which was conveniently located RIGHT NEXT DOOR) then called it a night. I just couldn't have walked up 5 more flight of stairs, even for tickets to Paris Fashion Week.

Well thankfully FW05 didn't have any Diane Von 'Fiasco'bergs, no lighting collapsed, no wardrobes malfunctioned, no heels or ankles were broken, but ANGIE GOODNESS lost one of her acrylic 6 inchers at the 'Its still summer and still hott' show at Pala just like a modern day Cinderella would. I think Prince Charming in a 700 series BMW found it for her too.

Did you hear one of the supposed adults supervising the whole FW05 thang got himself caught smack dab front and center in a good olde fashioned, all out, hair pulling, cat scratching, chick fight between to obvious karate practioners if the well placed, jewel crushing, double snap kick at lightening speed he received while reconning one of the FW05 venues a week before was any indication.
The supposed adult and his childhood best friend were at the max packed club at the invitation of the management, and were just getting the spat under control whe one of the club's bouncers, grabbed the supposed adult in a near death experiencing rear choke hold, crushing a perfect molar into 2 large pieces in the process, not mentioning a good lateral head compression that left courdaroy sleave imprints imbedded in his face, DR. Noah to ER stat! No harm no foul the supposed adult thought since his head returned to its normal football shape after a few daze, and his dentist said he will live till he gets a gold crown.

A few designers needed to bail from the FW05 festivities for whatever reasons too. Some good some lame. The best ones being "A dog ate my spring collection '06", and "I thought it was fishin' week 05 and caught a 6 foot sturgeon instead."

The models were all terrific, showing up promptly, enduring hair/make up and the normal snafus, but to a couple of you....you can't pour yer own! OLCC says. As does Simon, Paula, Rueben, and 9 out of 10 dentists surveyed. Even that Geico guy saving money on his car insurance says no. So do bar owners.

Also no more wheelie popping or cycle jumping off the piles of construction sand around China town any more ok you guys (grrlz)? Event insurance doesn't cover Evel Knevel stuff. Only lost contacts and broken heels. No more back flips down and off the runways; pyrotechnics or explosions; vodka, red bull, or rock star chugging, or Pala potsticker or Kobe beef burger eating contests either; no more mauling Portland's finest or their cycles, autos, helos, horses, or fire arms. Yes I am talking to you! You all know who you are. Baad models!

Who all was drinking the Voodoo Lounge raw oyster and stoli vodka shooters at the 'Laid back and casual' show Eric and SB? Fear is no factor for some.

Hi Sgt. Mjr. Kim Peck. Did you think you would escape my wrath? Kim Peck who we made shoot the models from odd angles with no lighting or back grounds and who came up with good stuff anyways? Oooh Kim, know my wrath from afar. I so want to spill how cool you are. Can I? Please? But let me say 36 foot Fiesta limousines make good hook up locations we hear from both Tom and Kim Peck. I will spill that Evonne De La Fuente got her hair cut! But I can't tease her cuz it loox so fab! Dang.

Michelle Adler of Adrianna by Michelle seems to have lost a big umbrella and some other stuff in a white canvas bag, so whomever picked it up for her, Madler is frantic as that umbrella saved her life in the Croation army once and she wants it back, please with shugar on top. Actually some of the items in it are not hers, so please, if anyone knows of this let me know asap!

After the first Crush show teaser, Craig from Pala who doubled as a model for the night was heard to say "That was almost emberassing'. That was more than almost funny.

On a different note.....I gotta give Alison Sumner of Bossy Boots a big woo hoo for having the most "Fearsome Fashions" in all of FW05!!!! I was properly fearing that! And in a show that was properly fearsome that was a roar!

Speaking of fear.....Dante's owner and mangement seems to have hosted a big after party for the Portland Music Festival the night before our "I want to be feared" fashion show, leaving us to do make up and hair in the parking lot out back till Kim Peck and kristin Arnette called some of their people to get the bouncers in early for us!
I was feeling the fear thinking they may have forgotten us all together! Until I remembered Mr. Faillace' had posted our show at his expense in the upcoming events Dante's runs in the local 'papers. Then Kim opened the door and rescued us anyways. Drama.

Portland's own Ashkan and contributor for Ultra PDX voted the long white number that Bella Bridal and Stacy Joines contributed to the Minoan Room show as one of the prettiest dresses of all FW05 and every girl (and a few boys) dream!

Thanx again to Sarabeth and Eric for the limo ride in Fiesta's big bad 36 foot excursion as an after finale decompression time, too bad someone (Shane and Autumn) got their car with their dog in it towed from a no parking zone and cut the limo ride short for everyone. But I gotta rib those guys they are so cool. Sorry about the doggie bail though.

Fun Semper fashionista fact: A flock, herd, scrum, tango, or murder. Which is the designated unit of measure for a group of models? Answer someplace below.

Shaun the lead security guy from Pala had an after the Finale' party that only the coolest peeps were invited to. Keeping in formation with his security lifestyle it was on a need to know basis. How/why I was invited still escapes me. Gotta thank Shane and Autumn for leading me and my wingman outta the neighborhood since we were both so lost it wasn't funny. It was sooo hard leaving at 0530 hrs (Shaun speake) when 1/2 of the Pala bouncer contingent had a big $ poker game going, and the other 1/2 were slamming my new favorite game dominoes.

Thanks to Rock Star energy drink with its taurine, caffeine, l-carnetine, guanine, trinitrotoluene, and uranium. You kept me going pal.

FW05 was one long, ambitious, and crazy week, and I wouldn't take money to do it again, nor to never have done it though. Or whatever I mean to say. Alot of peeps busted their behinds and sweated this one out to help keep Portland on the fashion map, I know their efforts were appreciated.

A Tale of Two Fashion Weeks
Portland Joins Paris and New York in Promoting Local Designers—Now with TWICE the Fashion!

We may be small, but we're nimble.

Unlike San Francisco, which is only on its second year of joining established fashion capitals like New York and Paris in hosting "Fashion Week(s)," Portland is already on its third consecutive year of showcasing local designers, with a sprawling schedule of shows spread through September 16. And, if you attended Emily Ryan and Liza Rietz's Wednesday, September 7th show at Savoy, you could actually pack in more than two full week's worth of daily shows.

This year our city has managed to sprout two separate and overlapping Fashion Weeks—one helmed by boutique star Seaplane, the other by Semper Fashions. Together, they represent two tiers of the local scene; while Seaplane's series, titled "The Collections," features some of the most recognizable names in town, Semper's affair features newer, less established designers.

For years Portland has been building momentum towards national and international recognition, thanks to magazines like W, Elle, Lucky, Bust, Women's Wear Daily, and Venus—the attention being mainly focused on Seaplane. The women behind the store, designers Kathryn Towers and Holly Stalder, are already well known, as are others featured in The Collections (Adam Arnold, Elizabeth Dye, Emily Ryan, etc.)—at least locally. And while these are Portland's rising stars and among the most likely to catapult into world-class status, the scene remains too small to attract the kind of international press that was summoned to cover the collections displayed in San Francisco—much less the turnout that routinely show up in Paris.

And while snobs could dismiss Portland's efforts on grounds of size, geography, reputation, and the economics of the local industry, our small scene of creatives continues to thrive in its native environment—marked by resourcefulness and independence. This perseverance will eventually pay off, and in the process offer an excitingly new and accessible scene, ripe for expansion.

Another example of the personality Portland brings to the table is the execution of Semper Fashion's own series of Fashion Week shows. A loose affiliation of designers and show producers, Semper Fashion's Tod Foulk, along with close friend SaraBeth Chamber of the Saffrona lines, took up the task of masterminding their own Fashion Week. Not only interested in showcasing the designers and their creations, Semper's events aim to benefit the models, stylists, and boutiques involved in the project.

Further, these events act as benefits for the Multnomah Co. Animal Shelter and Maiti Nepal, an organization that works to prevent the trafficking and exploitation of Nepalese girls, in part rehabilitating them by teaching them culinary and craft skills. Semper's Fashion Week will incorporate purses made by some of these young women, each tagged with the name of its creator. On top of that, a can of food for the Oregon Food Bank knocks a dollar off the price of admission. In the end, the hope is that many of the designers will be picked up by some of the 400 retail buyers invited to the Semper shows.

While both wings of Portland 2005 Fashion Week promise to be distinct in terms of aim and execution—"The Collections" being a sleek, concise affair, while Semper is sprawling and a little nutty—for the rest of us it's playtime; a chance to sample a wide variety of what's to come from the many tiers of the Portland fashion scene.

Opening Night—The first night of Semper's extravaganza will feature everyone involved in the shows—every designer, stylist, and model will have a hand in it. Some examples of the lines you'll see are Adrianna by Michelle's clubby, hip, youthful dresses; Saffrona's classy formal dresses (which often feature imported silk and Swarovski crystals); Sizzle's (aka Ray Solaris) hand woven chenille-infused sweaters; WeMa's streetwear-oriented skirts and tops; Ali May's (aka Alison MacMillan) boldly colorful contemporary women's wear; Afrodijio's hiphop chic-wear; and Magalí Corzo's salsa inflected dresses and separates. Thursday, Sept 8, Pala Fashion Lounge, 105 NW 3rd, 8 pm, with shows on the hour until midnight, $10

Menswear—In a rare turn of events, tonight's show will focus exclusively on clothing for men, including Rocket (Ray Solaris' menswear answer to Sizzle for women), Saffrona's swimwear for men, and more. Portland Fashion Week
Like New York, our very own Portland is in the midst of its own Fashion Week. Sure, Michael Kors and Calvin Klein are not strutting down the Portland runway - we have something more unique and local! Several of the best Portland original clothing and accessories designers will be putting their best fashion foot forward during Portland’s Fashion Week.

Local designers Saffrona, Wema, Rocket, Tres Savvy, and Nora Catherine are just a few of the names on this year’s list. It’s also a chance to admire some of the beautiful, up-and-coming models getting their start in Portland.

These designers may not be the current labels you drool over on the racks of a major department store, but remember, Tommy Hilfiger and Vera Wang didn’t get their start at Olympus Fashion Week in New York. All designers have to get their experience somewhere, and they’re at a point in their careers where they need your support! It may only be a couple of seasons before you DO see one of these Portland designers dressing celebrities and competing with the current fashion icons, and you’ll be able to brag that because you’re such a forward-thinking maven, you were sporting that designer waaaay ahead of the curve.

Portland’s Fashion Week officially kicked off last Thursday night on September 8th, but is still going strong and will continue with fashion shows and events until September 16th, when it culminates in the Fashion Week 2005 Finale at Pala Fashion Lounge at 8:00 p.m. For a complete list of designers who have already shown at this event, as well as detailed information on the remaining events, go to www.semperfashion.blogspot.com.

KIM PECK SAID ABOUT FW05 ON HER WEBSITE www.scene7photography.com.......Fashion Week '05 was a whirlwind of activity. Pala, Dante, Crush, Voodoo Lounge, The Greek and much more!

The models were amazing, the hair and makeup magnificent and I was there to shoot it all! I think I loved backstage best of all though. Watching the transformation of the models from "girl next door" Portland city girl to DIVA was amazing. I think Chelsea of "Wild Eyez" fascinated me the most. She has this infectious energy that you cannot help but get absorbed in (and a great smile). Made my job so much easier!

I want to thank Sarabeth Chambers, Eric Christensen, Tod Foulk, Marie Saturn, Imade' (Pala Fashion Lounge) and all the other hardworking designers that are toooo many to mention.

In the aftermath of hurricane Katrina, Saffrona and Semper Fashion are contributing 100% of the proceeds from the Voodoo Lounge/Ohm fashion show on Thursday night Sept. 15, 2005 to the American Red Cross.

In addition the following designers to date have contributed items for a silent auction to be held at the "Black and White" finale Friday night Sept. 16, 2005 benefiting the relief efforts as well.

Fashion lovers at the Sept. "First Thursday" festivities were treated to a little surprise taste of what to expect out of Saffrona's '06 line. Nine models including Dione Fernandez and Autumn Marshall made the side walks of The Pearl theirs as they modeled some of Saffrona's '06 cocktail and evening gown collections.
Heads turned as the ladies greeted attendees and handed out post cards with FW05 information, but it wasn't only Portland's Top Models or the beautiful Saffrona gowns that caught the attention. Chauffering the precious cargo for the night was none other than Portland's longest limousine courtesy of Tom and Fiesta Limousines 503 533 5758 www.fiestalimousine.com.
The originally scheduled fashion-glama-bago was having a bad hair day, but never to let bad hair (or transmission problems) ruin a good party, SEMPER FASHION's The Nams put the word out and Saint Tom of Fiesta Limousine came to our rescue. Arriving with the 36 foot battle cruiser, (the biggest and baddest limo in Oregon which has everything including a kitchen sink), Tom the company owner took great care of us that night and did so well manuevering this land yacht that we even had enough time for a little show starting out front of Fashion Week participant boutiques Tres Savvy and ohBaby running clear to Glisan for the evening dinner crowds on NW 23rd.

FW05 Model Auditions at PALA and model boot camp at the Minoan Room

At the behest of FW05 Producer and designer of Saffrona, Sarabeth Chambers, Portland top model Dione Fernandez and model/photographer/stylist/mentor/major domo of Portland fashion Marie Saturn ran the Fashion Week 05 model boot camp Sunday Aug. 28th at the Greek Cusina.

About 100 dedicated men and ladies (including
Veester Lyles, Gillian Morris, Autumn Day, Tara Piccolo, and Pala barman Craig were in attendance) representing 2 agencies and the best modeling talent Portland has to offer traded in 3 hours for some great choreography, runway and style coaching.

Marie had the men down in the Taverna level of the Cusina, whipping them into shape by having them practice walking, pivots, and even the good old 'coat removing' move, much feared in Milan and the more martial Shao Lin circles. While Dione and the ladies dominated upstairs in the Minoan Room with saucey 'tudes and heels pounding the hardwoods.

Thanx to Ted Pappas, Greek Cusina owner for helping us with the sound system and letting us tear the place apart for a few hours. Thanx Mr. P!

Well, rising from the ashes like the over cliched phoenix, Portland's own Fashion Week has been revived in no small part by the efforts of following local fashionistas and boutiques:

The Seaplane gals on 23rd-who chose the time frame from which to showcase 8 of their favorite local designers and who beat us to the punch in announcing their totally sassy and classy, autonomous, and just 'plane' awesome 'fashionweek' plans. google or call them for details.

Tod Foulk of SEMPER FASHION is starring as the evil King Arach of Nid, a major speaking roll.
In as much as Tod is loaning some of his martial arts collection as weapons to be used on the set, and also serving in an advisory role on the use of fire arms, he is wondering if any seamstress types out here would be interested in whipping up a wiazrds type cloak/hat combo for the production. All material will be supplied as well as a small stipend and credits in the movie.

Also a fairy type (read:modelesque female) has not been cast yet and anyone interested in playing this character should email producer Nathan Marcel greatseamonster@yahoo.com for further info.

OAKS PARK SUMMER FASHION SHOWS!!!!!

What a score! The Austin Reed, executive producer of the American Teen TV Network, a comcast subsidiary, has tapped SEMPER FASHION for producing summer fashion shows at Oaks Park! How cool was that?!

Basically their idea is to have 2 shows over the summer, beginning in late July. They will supply the venue, music, lighting, M/C, etc. We just need to model, and show fashions. Tooooooo easy!!!!

Any interested people should just email me (Tod) duh, at todfoulk@msn.com and we can get this party started! A possible 4000 people attend Oaks Park on any given summer Saturday. Good exposure, and we should get some cool press with this gig! SEMPER FASHION will make sure photogs and a videog will be on hand to capture those 'memorex moments'.

(Oregon Considered) - When it comes to fashion, fleece and jeans seem to figure prominently in the wardrobes of many Oregonians. But hundreds of local fashion designers are working to change that. From Oregon resident Michelle DeCourcy, whose designer dress was worn by Norah Jones at the Grammys, to Allison Leigh Howard, an Oregonian who made People magazine's list of hottest new designers, it appears the Beaver State is becoming fashionable

As Pete Springer reports, a version of Oregon Vogue magazine is still a ways off, but not as far as you might think. Models strut down the runway. The clothes are flashy, fancy, and sometimes gaudy. Paris, London, or New York it's not but Oregon's fashion industry is gaining ground.Diem Le is getting her apparel design degree this year from Oregon State University in Corvallis. She loves Oregon, but is quick to admit it's not a place known for its cutting edge fashions. Diem Le: Yeah, I would love to sparkle things up in Oregon. We're the eighth out of the states to grow in terms of fashion and that's what I've been researching on should I move to New York or LA? While the small college town of Corvallis may seem an unlikely place for fashion aficionados, OSU graduates 25 to 30 apparel design students every year. Leslie Burns is the chair of their Department of Design and Human Environment. She also co-authored The Business of Fashion, a book used by several New York schools, including the prestigious Fashion Institute of Technology.Leslie Burns: I would say Oregon is obviously known for sportswear, but there is a natural casualness that I know when visiting scholars come here, and they say if we could just imitate that natural casualness in a way that just is natural to Oregonians, we don't think of it as fashion. We just think of it as, well, that's what we wear', and yet it is a look and it is something that is copied elsewhere. Burns says many of her graduating students end up in Portland which is now seen as a mecca for those in the creative industry from filmmakers to graphic artists to clothing designers.This artistic migration amounts to more than 12,000 jobs and a $744 million annual payroll, according to the Portland Development Commission.The PDC is actively promoting growth in what is known as the creative class'which includes fashion. The agency provides loans, grants, and technical assistance for up and coming fashion designers. It's support that attracts people like Anna Blossom Cohen, who used to design professionally for Patrizia Pepe in Italy. Anna Blossom Cohen: It's not quite here yet. But it's gonna be here, I mean that's what I'm here for. Cohen is working on a new line for those who want to buy affordable and fashionable clothes that don't rely on the exploitation of other people or the environment.Anna Blossom Cohen: Right now that doesn't really exist in the industry in a way that answers that question for somebody who is stylish and trendy and up with the trends and really fashion forward. While being fashion forward and living in Oregon may seem to be at odds, most local designers agree: Oregon is a unique place with ideas you won't see elsewhere.Shelly Westerholt: I know that my designs are a far cry from what you're going to see on the New York runways. Shelly Westerholt designs for Urban Girl Northwest and Halo Lingerie.Shelly Westerholt: I'm a little bit more practical and I apply my Oregonian lifestyle, my Pacific Northwest lifestyle to thinking what's practical here in Oregon what does Oregon dictate in comfort and realism. This kind of practical thinking seems to permeate most aspects of Oregon's fashion industry from clothing design to cosmetics to modeling. Runway model Kim Erskine. Kim Erskine: It's much more lax here in Portland, the style is more relaxed, the shows seem more relaxed, agencies seem more relaxed, standards are definitely more relaxed in terms of body and height. Leslie Burns: The fashion industry in Oregon as it has evolved over the years will continue to be a very viable player within the global economy. Our companies are very in tune with what consumers want, they're in tune with what's happening worldwide, and that's absolutely necessary to be successful these days. And while Oregon's newest fashion designers may not hit it that big, Portland and Corvallis see their fashion investment as one key to the region's economic success.

The man wore a tuxedo and a blindfold. The woman wore very little at all. Strutting down the fashion runway in tall shoes and tiny lingerie, she led the formally attired man by a red sash that bound his hands.
Fashion Paloozazaza 2005 earned its extra "za"s.
The quirky fashion event last Saturday featured clothes, accessories and lingerie created by 15 Portland designers who sell their wares at independent boutiques and Web sites. An audience of about 600 found their way to a warehouse in North Portland for the unusual event.

There are days when Fiona Foulk is a typical 12-year-old middle school student. Days when she throws on jeans and a sweatshirt and doesn’t give a thought to the fashion world. Then there are those other days — days that are recorded on her dad’s camera and put into a growing portfolio of high fashion. Days when Fiona watches lithe young things walk the runways of Portland’s fashion shows modeling the purses she created. Next Friday will be one of those days. This is when Fiona will join a bevy of Portland-area fashion designers to put on the debut Rock-n-Roll Fashion Show. The event starts at 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 12, at the Greek Cusina, 404 S.W. Washington St., Portland, and will feature clothes and accessories from 16 of this area’s up-and-coming designers. Featured prominently in the show are the belts and purses Fiona creates in the living room of her father, Tod Foulk’s, Gresham home. “I’ve always loved crafts, and when I was younger I wanted to be a fashion designer,” Fiona says. “I used to draw dresses all the time, dresses with long, pretty, flared sleeves … then my grandma and my great-grandmother taught me how to sew.”Only 10 years old at that time, Fiona discovered that some materials were easier — and cheaper — to come by. She found old ties at area thrift shops, scoured vintage stores for the more valuable, quality silk ties and created small, simple purses that fit well with the high-fashion world of runway modeling. “They don’t detract from the clothes,” Tod Foulk says. “And the belts look good with the swimwear.”Many of the designers featured in the Rock-n-Roll Fashion Show specialize in two-piece swimsuits and use Fiona’s purses and belts to emphasize their hips and waists. Tod Foulk helps his daughter make the belts, braiding them from fine leather.The belts, like the slim tie purses, are simple in style but unique in their use of intricately braided leathers and Bali silver accoutrements. Lengthy, the belts attach at the hip and cascade bits of leather and silver down the thigh of the model.The Foulk father-daughter team is currently creating a similarly styled necklace that will be used in the Greek Cusina fashion show. Fiona cuts her purses in such a way that they retain the look of a necktie. They are slim with a long leather or beaded strap and roomy enough for the essentials — a billfold, a lipstick tube, keys and maybe even a cellular phone. “People really like them for going clubbing,” Tod Foulk says. “You can wear them on the dance floor.”Fiona sells the purses in a few upscale Northwest boutiques including Sofada, 4623 N.E. Fremont St., Portland. The bags retail for about $19 for a regular style and up to $30 for a fancier purse. The belts go for $25 to $30, depending on the style.Tod Foulk uses a 10,000-year-old Japanese braiding method known as Kamihimo to help make the belts. He uses a rounded wooden table, an “amurudai” and is teaching Fiona the intricate process. He says he’s extremely proud of his young progeny’s talents and has already recorded Fiona’s displays in local fashion events. That includes the Portland Fashion Week last year, where Fiona’s purses popped up at a fashion event at Pioneer Courthouse Square and at the week’s big show inside the Portland Art Museum’s ballroom. “She’s incredible,” he says of his daughter. The Foulk have pulled a variety of designers together for the upcoming fashion show, including a couple of local Gresham folks. Erin “Ivory” Hanna, of the fashion clothing line Awearness, will show off her new line of ski apparel. Hanna will graduate in June 2005 from the Art Institute of Portland with a degree in fashion design.Jennifer Kuenzel-Jones, 27, a hairstylist at the Village Day Spa, 1470 N.E. Village St., Fairview, will work on the models — half of whom were provided by Katie Ludwig, owner of Swank Models, Inc.“I’ve never done a fashion show before, but I thought that this was such a neat idea that I knew I had to be a part of it,” Kuenzel-Jones says. “I’ve been going through tons of magazines from the U.K. and listening to a lot of different music to get some ideas.”The rock-n-roll portion of the fashion show will include music from the ’80s and ’90s and models will probably sport some outrageous, “cutting-edge” hair and makeup styles, Kuenzel-Jones says. “I’m bringing an assistant, Simone Mickleberry, to help,” she says. “I’ve been told there will be 10 models, so I’ll need an assistant and I’m bringing a ton of hair extensions and hope I’ll have some time to experiment and play with the styles.”The event is open to all ages and tickets are $5 each. Thanks to Fiona’s love of animals, proceeds from the fashion event will benefit humane societies in Multnomah County and in Columbia County, where Fiona lives part-time with her mother.Talking to a reporter on a day when she’d rather be a regular 12-year-old than a fashion designer, Fiona says she wants to be a patrol officer specializing in animal-abuse cases some day. She used to envision a career in fashion design, she says, but now “wouldn’t want to devote” her life to it. “It’s fun for now though,” she says.

Fashion is a copy cat. It's always imitating styles from other cultures. One year, designers look to Latin America for frou-frou dance skirts. The next year, they're making Moroccan-style tunics. The result isn't always true to the source material.
One trend sweeping design showrooms is for all things Asian. Not modern Asia, which borrows as much from American culture as it lends, but a romanticized Asia of long ago.
Kimonos and obis, beautiful brocade silks and intricate embroidered jackets -- reserved for special occasions in Japan and China -- are glamming up everyday wear in the West. Gucci attached an obi-like belt to a wrap blouse in a recent collection. Eileen Fisher is selling a sheer white jacket this summer that's loosely based on a kimono.
Bright Chinese silk fabric inspired Portland designer Michelle Adler, 23, to update the traditional cheongsam dress. At a recent fashion show of Oregon designers, (Fashionpaloozazaza 05) Adler debuted her Adriana by Michelle collection, which included four of the Chinese-inspired silk dresses. By the end of the night, she'd sold three of the feminine and sophisticated dresses.

The models were amazing, the hair and makeup magnificent and I was there to shoot it all! I think I loved backstage best of all though. Watching the transformation of the models from "girl next door" Portland city girl to DIVA was amazing. I think Chelsea of "Wild Eyez" fascinated me the most. She has this infectious energy that you cannot help but get absorbed in (and a great smile). Made my job so much easier!

I want to thank Sarabeth Chambers, Eric Christensen, Tod Foulk, Marie Saturn, Imade' (Pala Fashion Lounge) and all the other hardworking designers that are toooo many to mention.

I just thought I would toss in a few pix from the November Rock and Roll Fashion Show we held at the Greek Cusina last fall. The sold out event was a blast, we had great models and designers, and the PDX-Posed tv series thought enough of us to air a segment on our fashion show. The fans of PDX-Posed thought enough of us to ask to see more and our segment made their 1st ever "Best of" program!!!!! Not too bad for our freshman outting.

Michelle Adler of Adriana by Michelle is hosting a cocktail party/get together/fitting meeting at her house scheduled for 6:30 PM, Saturday July 9th. This is open to all show participants, so designers, bring some swatches, yer measuring tapes, a notebook, a good 'tude, and yer bad selves. Models ..... show up if u can cuz Tod will have the modeling release forms, and the 'play book' with the model and designer line ups, music, hair/make up info, etc.

Tod and Michelle will have a few bottles of wine and champagne, and Michelle is having a light buffet, but everyone should bring a libation of choice too. After the work gets done and the booze gets drunk, we r all going to Pala Fashion Lounge and Voodoo Lounge to shake off some calories and be seen by the masses! Dress accordingly! bring a camera!

Oh so u haven't heard of the Pala Fashion Lounge yet? Well u won't if u have to get all yer info from the 'b'Oregonian! But if u r a reader of Elle or Vogue u will learn all about it in their fall issues! However u can tell everyone that u heard it here 1st by reading....the rest of the story!

Imade Sukarna, owner/designer of 5 elements, a cool chic men's clothing line based in Portland, OR, but with offices and manufacturing in Indonesia, has opend Pala- a cafe/bar/restaurant for and by fashionistas! After the Crush show Autumn Marshall, her man Shane, Evonne, Tod, Naomi and her man Rick all went over for the industry night Imade throws for the local design community. He has a BIG menue, with some good good fooders, and he runs happy hour specials all night for those 'in the biz.' We stayed all night with Na, Evonne and Rick closing it down. A lot of bull got shot, but alot of future fashion fun planned!

Keep reading here for the latest on the still top secret "1st annual UNofficial Portland Fashionweek" being brewed up by Tod of SEMPER FASHION and Imade himself.

While on the subject of Pala fashion shows....... SEMPER FASHION will be sponsoring another show set for mid August, tentatively scheduled as 'bikinis, martinis, and a whole lot more 2" subtitled...'because once is never enough' featuring MORE local designers and modeling talent!
Of course it will be a night of fun fashions benefitting local and international charities. So start planning to attend now!

Ok, so Mitch Calhoun owner of the very cool, very gay bar called Crush on SE 14th and Mo' had his "Splashion" Show Sunday June 25th. If u missed it, U missed it! Semper Fashionistas Fi Foulk of DoubleCross Belt Co., Naomi Raquel of Naomi Raquel Designs, Michelle Adler of Adriana by Michelle, and Shelly Westerholdt of Urban Girl NW all showed some pieces.

Familiar Semper Fashion Models Evonne De La Fuentes, Amanda Amador, Blanca Blanco, Kim Erskin and Autumn Marshall were all modeling, with new recruits Betty and Sherrice showing off for the crowds too. In the audience were Fashionpaloozerz SaraBeth Chambers of Saffrona, Tod of Semper Fashion and the DoubleCross Belt Co., and Carolyn Claire Mitchell of Carolyn Quinn showing their support for local fashion. Of course Marie Saturn of Saturn Styles Studios was shooting the whole she bang!

Ahoy! (sorry couldn't help myself) Portside of a Carver 61. A similar vessel was used as the backdrop for the Saffrona/DoubleCross Belt Co./Maiti Nepal photoshoot. Below are a few pix from that. Thanx Brad of Sundance Yacht Sales for letting us all play dress up on the yacht. Brad had about 30 of these puppies dockside if anyone is in the market. Tell them to say "Tod sent me!', then let us play dress up on their boat too.
